About Breast Cancer In South Africa

Breast cancer is the most common women’s cancer in South Africa with one in 27 women diagnosed with the disease and more than 3 000 women die each year in South Africa.

You are more at risk if you eat a diet high in fat, you don’t exercise regularly, are overweight or you drink more than two glasses of alcohol per day.

You are also at higher risk if you are over 40, your mother or sister had breast cancer, you started your period at a young age, you went through menopause at a late stage, or you had children after the age of 40 or not at all.

Symptoms include a lump in your breast, unusual swelling, puckering of the skin (like an orange peel), a sore or rash, pain, and discharge from the nipple, indentation of the nipple (instead of pointing out and forward, it is pointing sideways or inwards).

This Is What You Can Do To Safeguard Yourself:

• Breast Self Examination (BSE) to identify any changes in the breast
• Have annual check-ups
• Mammogram (once a year after age 40)
• Eat a balanced diet full of fruit and vegetables
• Exercise and maintain a healthy weight
